Top stocks: BIOF, VRNG, OTT, AMPL, ALNC

The World Bank cut the expectaion on China’s economic growth; investors are waiting for the results of the meeting of eurozone finance ministers. Trady was thin; U.S. stocks opened lower and finished with a narrow range.

Monday is a big day for BioFuel Energy Corp. (BIOF), the stock led top stocks percentagewise with an increase of 23.26%, or $6.36, to $6.36 in the regular trading session. In the after-hours trading session, BIOF stock rose by 3.62%. The intraday volume was 729,908 shares, higher than the average daily trading volume of 597,878 shares. According to Nate Silver of NYT, Romney has an 80% chance of losing while under Obama, The Environmental Protection Agency’s requirements for bio-diesel are bullish for producers. BioFuel Energy, through its subsidiaries, operatates as a producer and marketer of ethanol and distillers grain and corn oil. The company has a market capitalization of $39.69 million.

The second on the list of top stocks today is Vringo, Inc. (VRNG), a developer of software for mobile phones and provider of platform for mobile phone video ringtones. VRNG stock price begun to surge after the company announced a lawsuit against the U.K. subsidiary of ZTE Corp. Vringo is well positioned to enter negotiations talks with Google to resolve legal battle later this month. Finally, VRNG stock closed up 19.60%, or $0.89, to $5.43 with 28.00 million shares traded, much more than the average daily trading volume of 5.45 million sharess. In the after-hours trading session, VRNG stock price slid 1.10%. Vringo has a market capitalization of $316.27 million.

Stock price of Otelco, Inc. (OTT), a provider of telecommunications services, spiked up 17.30%, or $0.31 to finish at $2.30, on a volume of 1.02 million shares, more than seven times the average daily trading volume of 140,233 shares. OTT was talked about a lot by investors in forums and on message boards, but there is not any significant news about the company’s fudamental or business. The company has a market capitalization of $30.40 million.

Another micro cap stock also experienced a strong day. Ampal-American Israel Corporation (AMPL) is a investment company focused on acquiring Israel-related or Israel-based business, with a market capitalization of $4.60 million. AMPL stock price soared 16.31%, or $0.23, to $1.64, on a volume of 10,808 shares, slightly more than its average daily trading volume of 10,369 shares. There also came out no big catalyst for achivement of AMPL stock.

Alliance Financial Corporation (ALNC), the holding company of Alliance Bank, N.A., made itself one of the top stocks on Monday, as ALNC stock price popped over 16% to $45.79 after the compay announced it has agreed to merger with Nbt Bancorp Inc. The merger is valued at approximately $233.4 million and is expected to close in the second quarter of 2013. The intraday volume reached 141,468 shares, well above the average daily trading volume of 10,939 shares. Alliance Financial has a market capitalization of $219.07 million.
