Top stocks: BYFC, CHC, KH, CT, PBMD, QLYS

Weak U.S. economic data weighed on the market sentiment. Spanish banking recapitalization required funds of approximately 60 billion euros, in line with market expectations. The major U.S. stocks indexes opened lower and swung within narrow ranges to close lower. Howvever, these stocks talked below had ignored the downward trend, and made strong achievements on Friday.

Broadway Financial Corp. (BYFC) came in as the number-one among the top stocks today, by jumping 123.81%, or $1.30, to $2.35, with an intraday volume of 1.23 million shares, significantly above the average daily volume of 271 shares. The company said it swung to a profit for the second quarter, thanks to the decline in loan-loss provisions and non-interest expenses. Broadway Financial is a savings and loan holding company of Broadway Federal Bank, which is a community-oriented savings institution offering of financial services. The company has a tiny market cap of $4.10 million.

China Hydroelectric Corporation (USD) (CHC) was the second of the top stocks on Friday, its share price soared 129.60%, or $0.37, to $1.62, on a volume of 250,619 shares, much more than the average daily volume of 87,560 shares.The Chinese consolidator, operator and developer of small hydropower projects said its board members John D. Kuhns, Richard H. Hochman, Shadron Lee Stastney, Anthony H. Dixon and Stephen Outerbridge were replaced with Jui Kian Lim, Moonkyung Kim, Amit Gupta and Yun Pun Wong. China Hydroelectric has a market cap of $87.47 million.

Another Chinese concept stock also appeared on the list of top stocks on Friday, China Kanghui Holdings (KH), through its subsidiaries, operates as a developer, manufacturer and marketer of orthopedic implants in People’s Republic of China. Its shares surged 20.87%, or $5.24, to $30.35 with 2.43 million shares traded, much more than the average daily volume of 41,870 shares. The big movement was boosted by the news that Medtronic, Inc. (MDT) will buy China Kanghui Holdings for approximately $816 million in cash, or $30.75 per American depository share. China Kanghui Holdings has a market cap of $36.44 million.

Stock price of Capital Trust, Inc. (CT), a real estate finance and investment management company engaged in credit sensitive financial products, harvested 20.45%, or $0.64, to finish at $3.77, after The Blackstone Group LP (BX) announced to buy the company’s investment unit and take a 18.2% stake in the company for approximately $30 million. The intrady volume exploded from the daily average of 38,659 shares to 602,916 shares. Capital Trust has a market cap of $96.91 million.

Prima BioMed Ltd (PBMD) shares spiked 19.54%, or $0.94, to $5.75, on a volume of 1,413 shares, lower than the average daily trading volume of 2,386 shares. There seems to be no big news supporting achievement of PBMD shares. Prima BioMed has a market cap of $204.33 million.

An IPO stock also made it one of the top stocks: Qualys (QLYS) experienced a favorable first trading day, with an increase of 18.0%, or $2.16, to $14.16. QLYS stock opened at $12.18, almost flat with Qualys IPO price of $12. The stock was traded heavily at 9.75 million shares. The vulnerability management and compliance solutions company was valued at approximately $414 million, calculated by its IPO price.
